Regarding previous DDoS attacks

San Jose, Costa Rica – April 30, 2018 – Americas Cardroom today confirmed that their online poker room has been hit with DDoS attacks over the past week, affecting gameplay. In accordance with policy, tournaments were paused during the attacks while staff worked to mitigate the issue. In some cases, tournaments were cancelled, and registered players received full refunds — including the Million Dollar Sunday.
“In an abundance of caution and in the best interest of players, we were forced to cancel the Million Dollar Sunday last night,” stated Michael Harris, spokesperson for Americas Cardroom. “Unfortunately, we’ve been hit with continued attacks from an unknown third party. While player funds and information were not affected, these types of attacks do affect gameplay. We will never pay ransom or give in to cybercriminals, and are confident we’ll be able to mitigate and restore full service soon.”
As of Monday morning, though attacks remain ongoing, cash games and tournaments are now running smoothly while Sit & Go’s and Jackpot Poker games are still in the process of being fixed.
Harris notes that while the site was under DDoS attacks for much of last week, the security team was also able to mitigate the attacks and several of the big Sunday tournaments ran successfully, with larger prize pools than what had been guaranteed in the Sunday Special and several other events.
Americas Cardroom has been hit with DDoS attacks in the past — a type of attack in which cybercriminals flood a company’s servers with traffic in an attempt to bring the site to a halt. ACR’s security team members were able to mitigate past attacks and worked hard to do the same over the past week.
In addition to being notified of such attacks within the software, ACR notifies players of network interruptions through social media channels like Facebook and Twitter. Over the weekend, players were kept regularly updated.
